Caring & Supporting Day Treatment Programs

PHP is a short term intensive full day psychiatric program that runs Monday- Friday. Children are referred to us by the mental health community, schools, pediatricians, and parents. Our patients have a variety of emotional, social, and behavioral needs that may be impacting the child's ability to participate constructively in their home, school, or community.

Our PHP will assist your child in meeting goals such as developing coping skills, creating an individualized toolbox for long-term success and building new foundations for lasting success.

Typical Concerns Addressed In PHP

  • Anxiety disorders
  • Mood disorders (Depression, DMDD, Bipolar Disorder)
  • Trauma & Stress (PTSD, Adjustment Disorder)
  • Suicidal ideations
  • Non-suicidal self-injurious behaviors
  • School avoidance or phobia
  • Attachment concerns

  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Our PHP Includes:

MONDAY through FRIDAY

Therapeutic programming runs parallel to (most) school days

Our Child & Adolescent Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is an intensive treatment program that runs during the school day Monday through Friday. Treatment programming includes group therapy, medication assessment and management, expressive therapy, academic support, individual therapy, multifamily group, and individualized family support sessions.

Community Meeting

Your child will engage in a meeting with all other program participants to check in, welcome new participants, create goals for their day, and acknowledge the progress of peers who are graduating from the program. This meeting also provides an opportunity for participants to adjust to the plan for the day.

Group Therapy

While in the PHP program, your child will participate in group therapy daily with a licensed clinician. These therapeutic groups will allow your child to learn new coping skills and strategies for managing their emotions and responses to stress. New skills and strategies will be presented in an engaging and dynamic manner. Group therapy provides a supportive and therapeutic opportunity for participants to learn skills and promote healing while providing encouragement toward each participant’s progress towards goal attainment.

School

Each participant in our partial hospitalization program will have a daily school session where they will check-in with Plena’s in-house teacher and complete homework provided by the participant’s primary school (while their school is in session). Plena’s Master’s Level certified-teacher will coordinate with families and schools to obtain assignments and assess any additional learning needs participants may have within the school environment.

Participants will learn skills to help organize his or her homework, make a plan for the day and complete homework assignments. We also facilitate a school re-entry plan to ensure a smooth transition back to school.

Expressive Therapy

The American Psychological Association describes Expressive Therapy as “part of a whole-person approach to therapy.” This approach coincides with Plena’s mission to embrace each child’s unique abilities and preferred methods of learning to promote breakthroughs in treatment and enjoyment in therapy. Expressive Therapy has emerged in the past several decades as an innovative approach toward health in our contemporary society. Incorporating music, art, poetry, movement and drama in mental health treatment can help to explore challenges and create new healthy life patterns. Plena’s Expressive Therapy groups offer unique strengths-based opportunities for participants to let their guards down, build therapeutic rapport and express their most authentic selves in a non-threatening environment.

Family Support Sessions

When your child is struggling, the entire family is impacted. Often, in order to sustain meaningful progress with your child, each member of the family needs to be engaged and working together to create positive changes as a family. By participating in individual family therapy with a licensed clinician, we can help enhance your family system so everyone is working in concert instead of conflict. Through family support, our goal is to help you find ways to enhance the quality of life for every member in your family.

Plena Parent Academy

Parents and guardians of program participants are encouraged to attend our virtual multifamily group facilitated by our licensed clinicians. Discussion topics focus on evidence-based strategies intended to enhance a parent’s ability to effectively set healthy boundaries, empathize and provide emotional support to their children. Parents are empowered through hearing other families’ struggles and are also encouraged by each other’s unique stories and solutions. We believe that parents deserve to feel heard and understand that they are not alone in this journey.

PHP Individualized Treatments

Individual Therapy

Your child’s feelings, experiences, and needs are unique. In order to ensure your child receives individualized and comprehensive treatment, a licensed clinician will meet with your child throughout the week. Individual sessions are determined in response to your child’s treatment needs.

Medication Assessment & Management

Integrated medication assessment and management are crucial components of providing comprehensive care to your child. While not every child will require medication to assist in the management of their symptoms, in some cases medication may be a part of your child’s optimal treatment plan. In order to complete individualized assessments and make thoughtful recommendations, a board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrist will be on site daily. This allows real time assessment of your child’s response to medication and enables the psychiatrist to make accurate recommendations regarding modifications in coordination with you, your child, and the clinical team.
