Child and Adolescent Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
MONDAY through FRIDAY

Our Child & Adolescent Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is an intensive treatment program that runs during the school day Monday through Friday. The PHP serves children and adolescents that require more intensive services for behavioral health concerns including:
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Mood dysregulation
- Attention and focus concerns
- Suicidal ideations
- Self-injurious behaviors

- Emotionally dysregulated
- Perfectionistic
- Highly sensitive
- Distress avoidant
- Uncertainty avoidant
Milieu Meeting
Your child will engage in a 30-minute meeting with all other program participants to check in, welcome new participants, create goals for their day, and acknowledge the progress of peers who are graduating from the program. This meeting also provides an opportunity for participants to adjust to the plan for the day.
Group Therapy
While in the PHP program, your child will participate in two one-hour sessions of group therapy per day with a licensed clinician. These therapeutic groups will allow your child to learn new coping skills and strategies for managing their emotions and responses to stress. New skills and strategies will be presented in an engaging and dynamic manner. Group therapy provides a supportive and therapeutic opportunity for participants to open up about their individual struggles and provide encouragement toward each participant’s progress towards goal attainment.
School
Each participant in our partial hospitalization program will have a daily school session where he or she will check-in with Plena’s in-house teacher and complete homework provided by the participant’s primary school (while their school is in session). Plena’s Master’s Level certified-teacher will coordinate with families and schools to obtain assignments and assess any additional learning needs participants may have within the school environment.
Executive functioning skills are also taught to help the participant organize his or her homework, make a plan for the day and complete homework assignments. Additionally, participants will engage in social-emotional lessons via the evidence-based Social Thinking Curriculum by Michelle Garcia Winner, and will receive individualized academic support as needed.
Expressive Therapy
The American Psychological Association describes Expressive Therapy as “part of a whole-person approach to therapy”. This approach coincides with Plena’s mission to embrace each child’s unique abilities and preferred methods of learning to promote breakthroughs in treatment and enjoyment in therapy. Expressive Therapy has emerged in the past several decades as an innovative approach toward health in our contemporary society. Incorporating music, art, poetry, movement and drama in mental health treatment can help to explore challenges and create new healthy life patterns. Plena’s Expressive Therapy groups offer unique strengths-based opportunities for participants to let their guards down, build therapeutic rapport and express their most authentic selves in a non-threatening environment.
Plena Parent Academy
When our kids are struggling, the entire family system is impacted. Often, in order to sustain meaningful progress with participants, each member of the family needs to be engaged and working together to create positive changes as a team. At Plena, our goal is to help make these changes last by enhancing the quality of life for each and every family member.
Once per week, parents and guardians of program participants are encouraged to attend a virtual 45-minute multifamily group facilitated by our licensed teacher and clinical manager. Discussion topics focus on evidence-based strategies intended to enhance a parent’s ability to effectively set healthy boundaries, empathize and provide emotional support to their children. Parents are empowered through hearing other families’ struggles and are also encouraged by each other’s unique stories and solutions. We believe that parents deserve to feel heard and understand that they are not alone in this journey.
PHP – Additional Individualized Components
Medication Assessment and Management
Integrated medication assessment and management are crucial components of providing comprehensive care to your child. While not every child will require medication to assist in the management of their symptoms, in some cases medication may be a part of your child’s optimal treatment plan. In order to complete individualized assessments and make thoughtful recommendations, a board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrist will be on site daily. This allows real time assessment of your child’s response to medication and enables the psychiatrist to make accurate recommendations regarding modifications in coordination with you, your child, and the clinical team.
Individual Therapy
Your child’s feelings, experiences, and needs are unique. In order to ensure your child receives individualized and comprehensive treatment, a licensed clinician will meet with your child separately for at least one 30-40 minute therapy session daily. Additional individual sessions will be added as needed in response to your child’s treatment needs.
Family Support Session
When your child is struggling, the entire family is impacted. Often, in order to sustain meaningful progress with your child, each member of the family needs to be engaged and working together to create positive changes as a family. By participating in individual family therapy with a licensed program clinician, we can help enhance your family system so everyone is working in concert instead of conflict. Through family therapy, or goal is to help you to find ways to enhance the quality of life for every member in your family.
Child and Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
MONDAY through THURSDAY
Therapeutic programming runs after school beginning at 3pm
Our Child & Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is an intensive treatment program that runs after school Monday through Thursday. The treatment structure is similar to PHP, however, IOP provides a unique structure that allows for full time school exposure during the day followed by therapeutic programming in the evenings. Both programs serve the same behavioral health areas of focus. Treatment programming includes group therapy interventions, individual therapy sessions, medication assessment and management (as needed), expressive therapy, family support sessions, and a multifamily group. Small by design, our programs allow for customized and intimate care for each child.
IOP Check-In
Your child will engage in a 30-minute meeting with all other program participants to check in, welcome new participants, create goals for their evening, and acknowledge the progress of peers who are graduating from the program. This meeting also provides an opportunity for participants to transition from their school day to the afternoon treatment programming.
Group Therapy
Your child will participate in one hour of group therapy per afternoon with a licensed clinician. This therapeutic group will allow your child to learn new coping skills and strategies for managing their emotions and responses to stress. New skills and strategies will be presented in an engaging and dynamic manner using evidence-based treatments. Group therapy provides a supportive and therapeutic opportunity for participants to open up about their individual struggles and allows members to provide encouragement toward each participant’s progress towards goal attainment.
